Transformative and participatory research at UTN: visit of Dr. Johannes Halbe to close a course for Costa Rican academics

Dr. Johannes Halbe, professor at the Institute of Geography and the Institute for Research in Environmental Systems(IUSF), visited UTN as the final part of the course, “Applied transformative systems research for sustainable development”, which had as its main objective to learn participatory and systemic approach methods for interdisciplinary research and teaching.

The course included the development and presentation of research or teaching project proposals by the Costa Rican academics in which they applied the knowledge acquired. The topics presented were related to ecotourism, water resource management, strategic planning, coffee production, sustainable biomass management, bioinputs and artificial intelligence. In addition, during one stage of the educational process, a virtual interaction space was opened with students from the University of Osnabrück.

Also during his stay, Dr. Halbe visited different projects of adequate and circular management of agricultural waste, pineapple waste, ecotourism projects and community operators of drinking water service in different localities of the provinces of Guanacaste and Alajuela. He also shared with students of the Water Resource Management Engineering program at the Central Office and with Mr. Luis Ricardo Sánchez, Vice Rector of Teaching at UTN.

This visit took place from October 24 to November 1, 2024 and was organized by the Center for Sustainable Development Studies (CEDS) and the Vice Rector’s Office for Research and Transfer (VIT).
